Applications/KDE Internet (Recommendations)

From Shift Linux

aMSN

Description: aMSN is an open source, free clone of the MSN/Windows Live Messenger service.

Website: aMSN homepage

Installation: aMSN can be installed by selecting KDE Menu-->Applications-->System-->Package Manager (this will load Synaptic which I prefer but you can use the KDE one Package Manager for KDE4). Then you can do a search for 'amsn' and, when it comes up, select it for installation and then click apply. (Note: It may ask you to install other packages such as TCL and TK, let it do that as they are needed for aMSN to run).

Post Installation Notes: For some reason, KDE 4 does not add aMSN to the KDE Menu automatically (or at least it didn't for me). You can launch it by right clicking on your desktop and clicking Run Command then inputting amsn and hitting enter on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can try searching for aMSN in the KDE Menu search feature.

Bleeding Edge: Warning: Only recommended if you are an advanced user who is comfortable using a terminal. If you are an experienced user and wish to install the the latest daily build of aMSN, here's how. (Make sure you backup all your settings in case something goes wrong)

  • Goto their website (link above) and click on the Download page.
  • Scroll down to the section that says Latest development version (SVN Snapshot of _insert date_).
  • Download this to your computer. I prefer to save in a folder I have called downloads.
  • Extract the package and then go into that directory.
  • If you havent already, open a terminal and build the source using the generic install commands (./configure, make, sudo make install) Make sure you use the sudo on the last one to install it system wide and give you full access.

Works with: Shift Gnome/KDE/Lite
